Under Insurance

If you do not insure your household goods and personal effects for the full value as per the option you selected, what is known as coinsurance, under-insurance or average will apply. If you insure your property for less than 80% of its actual value, determined by the sum insured option you have selected, you will only be entitled to recover the proportion of any claim that the sum insured bears to 80% of the actual value.

Example:

You apply for a $2,000 claim.

Your household goods and personal effects has an actual total value, calculated by the Insurance Assessor appointed to the claim, of $40,000. However based on the sum insured amount you elected in your application, you only requested to insure the value of all your effects and goods for a total sum insured of $30,000.

Insured Value: $30,000

Actual value: $40,000

Proportion under insured is 75%.

Therefore the amount paid on your claim will be 75% x $2,000 = $1,500 - less any excess payable on the policy. The balance of $500 will not be paid due to the under insurance.

Recommendation: Always insure the complete full value of your goods to avoid this clause of the policy.
